Overall, the 2013 Mazda CX-9 range remains a strong and competitive force in the seven-seat large SUV segment. The updated styling, the availability of satellite navigation as standard on the mid-spec models and the genuine third-row practicality are all benefits which outweigh the lack of a diesel power plant....

There are a few areas where the Mazda6 is less than excellent. The top models are expensive, pushing beyond $40K for the diesel, and $50K for the loaded Atenza. The Sport and Touring offer a stronger value proposition in addition to a superior ride to the GT and Atenza. For those folks who have bought, or are looking to buy a Mazda2, consider yourselves both wise and fortunate. This is an exceptionally well put together car and perhaps the segment leader when it comes to performance and handling. From the throttle response, short-throw shifter, steering weight and accuracy and that distinctly sporty engine note, there’s enough MX-5 DNA in this diminutive little city car to leave a smile on your face every time you get behind the wheel. In a bustling SUV market, the CX-5 stands clear of many of its (admittedly ageing) rivals as a very good buy. It is certainly one worth careful consideration if you’re hunting for a new medium SUV....

There's very little to criticise with the CX-5 - it even comes with a full-sized spare and a decent 1800kg braked towing capacity. A few exterior curves, an understated interior with a high-riding seat that doesn't compromise the sedan handling and a willing engine make the CX-5 diesel a smart choice for buyers who will rack up big miles or just want the extra grunt without the pain at the service station....

With strong open-road dynamics and an interior that really shines in terms of finish and quality, the CX-5 Maxx makes a very positive impression. Keeping fuel use at a minimum without sacrificing driving enjoyment is a strong feature in its favour. But, while it’s a very good car, certainly one of the better buys of the moment, it isn’t all roses - if we were to pick a debit we think the engine could do with a little more punch....

It would be a mistake to dismiss the Mazda because of its awkward ‘out-there’ styling. Look beneath the surface and you’ll find one of the most capable utes on the market today....
