It may not be ultra-fast, or particularly polished with its cabin and refinement, but the Ford Fiesta Metal is an enthusiast’s special and a charmer to boot. If properly hard driving is the priority, then it’s an easy pick over a VW Polo 77TSI or even GTI, and the superb steering alone places it ahead of the otherwise-excellent, and quieter, Swift Sport....

Despite some heavy competition, the Ford Mondeo Ecoboost remains competitive in the medium car segment, at least until we steer the new Mazda6 and Holden Malibu on local turf. Whether it can remain a valid proposition until the new-generation Mondeo arrives in Australia in the first quarter 2014 remains to be seen....

It’s also a better SUV to drive than either the Captiva 7 or Toyota Kluger. But with the Australian-built SUV having only had relatively minor updates since its 2004 launch, a 2014 update will be an opportunity to bring some key areas of the Territory up to speed with emerging rivals....

There are the odd blemishes in addition to the torque steer, such as the poor turning circle, tyre noise that can get vocal on coarse surfaces, and headlights that aren’t true ‘auto’ headlights as they won’t switch off automatically if you have main beam selected (yes, we’re being picky).
Other than that, the new Ford Focus ST makes the perfect bridge between the old XR5 Turbo and the now-discontinued wild child Focus RS. The rich lineage of small fast Fords continues....

Here’s a good yardstick for measuring how good the all-new 2012 Ford Focus ST really is: It made the all-new, 487kW 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, driven on the very same day, seem bland by comparison. By this point, you may be asking yourself if I’ve been hitting the sauce a bit too hard lately. The truth of the matter is, the Shelby has straight-line performance on a perfectly paved surface completely covered — and then some. But the Ford Focus ST offers more bang for the buck when it comes to cornering and travelling on any road that is less than billiard-table smooth....

Small Fords have been huge in Europe for decades, but only more recently have models such as the Ford Fiesta started to get close to their sales potential in Australia. The Ford Fiesta is an old nameplate but locally still relatively fresh, having replaced the Festiva as the blue oval’s local city car offering in 2004. The latest-generation Ford Fiesta was released in January 2010, with an update coming a year later after a switch of production from Europe to Thailand....

If the Falcon is to continue beyond that date – and there are no guarantees from Ford that it will – Ford Australia faces another decision about whether to extend the inline 4.0-litre six’s lifespan further still by making the necessary investment to make it comply with Euro V emissions regulations coming into force in 2016....

Coming away from our time with the G6, we’re still shaking our heads at how great that engine is. Its power deficit is tiny compared to the identically-priced six cylinder - but the EcoBoost feels slightly more nimble and more satisfying to drive. The G6 won’t win any awards for interior or exterior styling, but Falcons have always been about honesty - what you see is what you get, no clever tricks, just a good solid effortless people’s car. The G6 EcoBoost gives the Falcon a technology and efficiency boost that, when word gets out, may give it some renewed momentum in sales. With this engine, a hugely underrated large car is made better....

So, it’s pretty dated inside and its packaging isn’t especially generous. But we’re willing to bet that few buyers will care about that the instant they give the accelerator a decent prod - for an SUV, it’s a bit of a road rocket. The Kuga isn’t a car for the family, it’s a car for younger buyers and couples who enjoy the outdoors as well as the occasional ‘blat’ up a twisty mountain pass. The Titanium is quite expensive though, and given you get just as much performance from the $38,990 Kuga Trend, we think it’s the better buy....
